Very well presented b&b. The building has lots of character from its original features to the furniture. My room was nice and the bed was as comfy as my one at home. Peter made sure to welcome me, and the breakfast in the morning he made was very nice. I would certainly recommend staying here.

The B&B is really nice, a beautiful building with lots of character and nice rooms, good bathrooms and good service. I received a text message from Peter with the door code a few hours before my arrival and entered the house without problems. A beautiful corridor leads you to the spacious rooms upstairs. The was a kettle with tea and coffee as well as a bottle of water and a chocolate bar which was a nice touch. There also was a breakfast form that you can fill out with your preferences for the morning. Several pubs &restaurants are nearby. I walked to the White Horse Pub 250 meters away for dinner which was nice. Slept well and had the cooked breakfast at 9 pm . Breakfast is really good in a beautiful lounge. Great coffee too! Peter the owner was very friendly and I will definitely come back here again.

I booked Rothmans B&B as I was in the area for a Birthday Celebration. Such a beautiful Building and location. Peter is an excellent host and very helpful. The room was large with a nice modern esuite shower room and hot drink making facilities.Great value for money if you are in the area, especially as it includes a delicious breakfast made to order from a large choice.Thank you Peter.

Lovely pleasant house with great garden. Good breakfast selection which is available pretty much when you want. Apart from cooked breakfastwhich is set times. Not a problem for me as I didn’t have it. Good off road parking for my motorcycle which is safe and away from public. More than adequate bathroom facilities (if you don’t mind sharing). I particularly like the fact I can get up very early, help myself and not be followed around. Tea and coffee available all day if wanted. Only negative is bin not emptied often enough, but this is a really tiny moan. This is my third stay and will be back next year as a cricket fan.

Perfect little B&B, nothing slick, pure character and the owner Peter is great and friendly! I had a little one bedroom with a shared bathroom. Bed was comfortable, shower wasn't amazing but adequate. I enjoyed my short stay and Peter stored my bicycle indoors for me. The breakfast (included) was homely and welcoming, and my porridge was adorned with every condiment I could ask for! I would only have changed the sweetened yoghurt for greek, but there was none. For the price I don't think I've enjoyed a stay more!

I found Rothmans B&B a friendly and inviting environment. The room was perfect and I was impressed to find they supplied a dressing gown and slippers for me to go to the shower room across the landing. The breakfast was good and all were friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again if I come back to Chelmsford.

The bed was very comfortable and my room was large. The wifi was very good. Breakfast was lovely and nice to have access to a microwave.My only issue was with the shower which was quite cold, I used the communal shower on the second morning which was better.

If you are staying in the Great Baddow area then this is where you should be staying. Pet friendly and what I believe is one of Baddows oldest buildings with fantastic staff/owners.Cannot recommend high enough, this is definitely our hotel of choice.

I stay here often and keep meaning to leave a review! The reason why I am a regular is that I always enjoy my stay. The rooms are comfortable (I have tried all rooms with own bathroom) and the cooked breakfast is a great way to start the day. Very last minute booking, but I immediately received friendly emails with all the relevant information. All accesses were by key codes, so no need to collect and return keys. Very reasonably priced. Slightly old-fashioned, which I liked, very comfortable, and self- service buffet breakfast available when I needed an early departure. Would certainly use it again.

I recieved a very warm welcome from the host.The room was warm and comfortable. Breakfast was at a high standard with plenty of options. The only downside was having a shared bathroom but that's understandable in such a property.

Also, I like to have the opportunity to catch up on my sleep once a week :-). In any case, there is a very good choice in a Continental breakfast at other times (fresh espresso coffee, teas, spreads - jams/marmalade/honey/chocolate, wholemeal and white bread (for toasting, is preferred), ham, salami, yoghurts and, of course, cereals and milk.I am sorry about the wifi - we are battling with BT to finally sort it (the latest is that they \"forgot\" to send the replacement modem. The wifi does work but requires persistent \"tries\" ( this PC suffers in the same way)Thank you againPeter, Proprietor

What a gorgeous place this is - the building is absolutely beautiful - we stayed in The Regency Room - after walking 18 miles it was heaven to relax in such a lovely spacious room. Peter, our host, was most welcoming &made us a delicious breakfast from the vast choice available - the by range of preserves I've ever seen!!

just could not get on with the mechanical door code machines on the bedroom door and front door.Twice we had to speak to the owner as our bedroom door lock wouldn't work, he had difficulty on one occasion, Perhaps Change them for digital door locks Wont come back because of it.

The room was homely if not modern and breakfasts were good although leaving early I missed one of the cooked breakfasts. However, the room not being ensuited has to be taken into account - having to leave the room in the middle of night and remembering to take a key to get in the bathroom and remembering the combination on the bedroom door to get back in again could be a challenge. It would be handy to have at least a handbasin in the room. The property is suited on a busy road with no opportunity for parking on street, and it is not so easy to recognize for a stranger. Once you know about parking in the kindy next door it is simple enough

First time staying at a 'Bed and Breakfast' so didnt have much expectations or comparison. Stayed in four post room with my puppy for one night, room was very big and comfy, but shower room was very small but ok for just myself. Was greeted after i got my bags into the room, Peter was welcoming and told me about any toilet business for my dog was not to be in the garden and there is a big park near by which i did know about beforehand. Couple of other guest we saw during our time there was polite enough. The building has character as it is old, so we did hear doors and floorboards throughout the night, which my puppy did react to everytime. Breakfast was nice, good selection in the breakfast room available at all times. Nice decent coffee too! My cooked breakfast was just what i expected. Good information and paperwork left in the room, had a simple form to fill in for pre ordering breakfast. I would recommend this place to a friend.

Full English breakfast was tasty, cooked by friendly host. Very peaceful and grounds pleasant on the eye. I would book to stay here again and recommend to my friends. I was not keen on the three door codes upon entry. The door code was hard for me to see with low lighting outside my room. I had to remember to take my glasses and the torch on my phone when I visited the toilet in the hall way, to make sure I did not get locked out of my room.

My room had a four poster bed, large room with all the facilities I needed.For the price I thought it was excellent,I loved the quirky and bespoke room.The bathroom was tiny but I was made aware and would rather have a tiny bathroom in this wonderful 2 grade listed building then have to share.Will definatly be booking again.Unfortuantly breakfast did not start until 7.30am so I had to leave before I could sample the food.

Excellent old House with lots of character. Very good garden, spent most of my time while there relaxing, reading and drinking coffee. Room a little stuffy but temp during stay on first two days was 28/29 degrees so can forgive that. A fan would have helped. This is only minor issue and will definitely stay there again. Very enjoyable.

Breakfast is good and people are nice... BUT the mattress in the Victorian room is shit. The mattress is very old and sags. The spring are popping out and I could not sleep. Sorry Sir, the minimum a customer expect is a decent mattress.

Was really good that we were allowed to bring dogs. Got a little fed up with all door codes especially during the night. Room was clean bedding was clean. However our bathroom was a little dusty. Breakfast was ok however sausages could have been a better quality. Far too many pots of jam marmalade laid out.

Rothmans B&B is a charming hotel, with a nice atmospere. The bathroom was however very small and the amount of water pouring from the shower was very small.

This is my second stay here both times for 2 nights. If you want something a little different this is the place. I stayed in both the 4 poster and regency room both were large with nice comfy chairs to sit in,shower room a bit small but it is a listed building. Every thing you need is just a short walk shopping area with every thing you need plus a nice food pub. Free parking so park up and enjoy your evening. I did.

As a lone female traveller I felt safe which for me is the most important aspect. The room was large and bed very comfortable. Nice added touches such as bar of chocolate and my invoice in the room upon arrival. The email I received prior to arrival was more detailed than any I have ever received from a hotel (I work in Hotels). My only criticism is the plumbing in the ensuite was very loud, my shower was cold and I was worried to leave it running to warm up after reading the "warning notice."Full breakfast is only served at 9am on a weekend and I would have petered this later or in my room.

Rothmans is a beautiful mansion house from a time gone by, wonderful garden that is sun facing and worth some mindfullness.A house with history, comfortable single bed and nicely equipped single occupancy room.A large selection of breakfast of breakfast cereals (no fresh fruit) but yogurts and a fully cooked breakfast if that is your thing, I prefer to keep it very healthy.I am staying next week in the Four Poster Room and look forward to this.

A nice stay for 2 nights. The property was lovely, set in a pretty garden. My room was comfortable with everything I would want, including a dressing gown and slippers for trips tothe toilet. Breakfast was god and generous. Peter was attentive. The only small issue was that my room was not made up after the first night, but that was not a particular issue for me (as I was only there 2 nights). Recommended.

This is the second occasions I have stayed at Rothmans.It really enjoy the old world charm of the house and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.Host Peter is friendly and helpful.The place has a slightly eccentric feeling which adds to the charm.

This b and b is lovely, the food was excellent and the owner, Peter was gracious.

Second stay here - staff are very friendly - breakfast ordered before 9 the previous night is excellent. Access all hours is by mechanical button key coded locks which still stress me out - the House is 400 yeas old so don't expect level floors or en-suite - but parking is easy although a short walk in heavy rain! and wifi works well

My friend and I stayed at the Rothmans B&B for one night. Upon our arrival we were met by the owner who was friendly and showed us to our rooms. My room was lovely, if you want perfection and everything to be immaculate then this would not be for you, but I really liked the original features and quirkiness of the house. I felt really comfortable there. My bed was really comfortable and the room had everything I needed. The bathrooms are small but there is enough room to do what you need to do. For the price it is great value and I would recommend it, as I mentioned it's not immaculate or perfect, but that's why I like it, the house has a warm welcoming feel and there is a sense of feeling at home there. My friend stayed in the four poster bed room which like mine was lovely, it had a large window overlooking the garden and a feature fireplace, as I said before its appeal to me is its imperfections which make it a very comfortable stay. My only criticism would be that there wasn't any mattress or pillow protectors, but both were clean and did not have any marks on them and the bedding was clean and fresh. Overall great value for money.

Lovly area, peter nice man, room was comfortable, but was only made up as an single occupancy but i requested a 2 person status. cleaning ok, but needed attention to detail as was bit dusty, shower was ok but herendously small bathroom, sat on toilet and if you lent your head forward u literally hit door frame,never seen anything like it, breakfast was literally served at 9 on sunday morning, so if u not down, your food is left there on table, apalling, no personel flexibilty, will not be returning. (I have actually been to a place in Bath which was smaller. The 9am breakfast is what we have found best suits most guests but guests do not have to check out till 11am and there is a wide ranging buffet breakfast option (Again, I\\\'m sorry if you were late down - I do try to tell everyone in person about the serving time and it is emphasised on the menu. I came for one night to have some time off, rest and write. I wanted to stay somewhere cosy, charming and comfortable far from the business of the city, and found exactly what I needed at Rothmans' B&B. I had to come by public transports which was very easy as it is near the bus stop. I loved the little attentions in my bedroom, i.e. mini chocolate tablet left on my bed with the towels and shampoo/shower gel samples, small water bottle, my own kettle with tea/coffee/hot choc'...I was very happy staying there, also liked the breakfast that was cooked for me, and hope to come back very soon !

Lovely building and great to wake up in a four-poster bed with a great view through the large sash windows. Breakfast very good with optimum choices. Security arrangements very good. Could not operate TV, and instructions need full update to be idiot-proof!(me). In this particular room, small shower and loo very cramped:I do understand planning clearance problems, but it might have been more honest to state these in the advert. Nikolas, thanks for the suggestions. I communal shower has a pump so should be fine - the other is awaiting the (large) funds necessary. 7 am breakfast means 6.20 wake up for me so asleep by 10.20pm for my needed 8 hours sleep (and guests can and do arrive late)....mmmm! We are about to paint and readjust the street side secondary glazing (fitted to cut street noise). Poor installation has made the secondary windows awkward. All the Best, Peter

I was using the B and B for a works Christmas do at a restaurant across the road. When I arrived with a colleague we let ourselves in with the codes provided. It was evident that nobody was there to see us in but we were well aware of this and pre warned that the owner may be out doing a school run etcwe headed up to our rooms which were on the first floor. The decor was amazing and it was very clean. I got easily into my room with the code provided on emails before and the room was nicely set up. There were towels left with a bottle of water and a small chocolate bar. There was a nice size tv in the room and a desk with breakfast information on how to fill it out and when it has to be done by which was easy. I had booked a shared bathroom room the bathroom was very clean but quite small but perfect for me. The bed was very comfy and clean and I enjoyed my nights sleep. In the morning we went down to the lounge for breakfast where there was a very big selection of cereals and drinks. Our food was dished up by 7.35 and hot and a nice size.I couldn't fault staying here. It was perfect for what I needed and a very beautiful building.

Rothman's did what it said on the tin! A value for money budget hotel. We needed somewhere to stay for one night and this did the job. Lovely old characterful house. The bed was clean and comfortable and we both slept quite well. Breakfast was tasty and freshly cooked and Peter a thoughtful host. A nice touch was the complimentary water and chocolate. Our private bathroom was down the hall and beautifully laundered dressing gowns were provided as well as slippers. The frustration for me was that some things were done really well but others suffered from a lack of attention to detail. Dead flowers not removed from the breakfast room, rug in bedroom not properly vacuumed, hairs in bathroom (not ours!). Things that do not cost a lot of money to put right. I understand that this is a big old house to keep up and having run a B&B myself I know that it is no picnic! Maybe I should have seen the house on a sunny Summers day rather than damp Novembers evening and my opinion would be different. All that said, if you are travelling on a budget, it is well worth considering Rothmans.

I stayed here to attend an inquest in Chelmsford. My room was the 4-poster room and I cannot remember in recent years having such a good night's sleep as I enjoyed that night. It did have the smallest bathroom I've ever seen too but that's what you get in such a lovely old building I guess.The breakfast the next day was perfect and Peter the owner was an extremely professional host.Would I stay there again? Absolutely.

We spent a night at Rothmans on Saturday 22 August, having been to V Festival at nearby Hylands Park.I found the convenience of having room key codes to access (thereby making check-in incredibly easy and convenient) was great.The Georgian Room we stayed in was lovely, with some nice little touches (chocolate and water!).Don't be surprised (as we were) by the fact your bathroom isn't an ensuite - you have a key to your own bathroom down the corridor.Breakfast in the morning was incredibly relaxed, the Sunday papers were on the comfy sofas, a wide array of breakfast choice and great host.All in all, a fabulous stay.Thank you Peter.

Having used other hotels in Chelmsford, I decided to try something different. This is a charming place to stay. Peter was very welcoming and we were able to order breakfast on line prior to our visit. I would certainly use Rothmans again and recommend it. As we were not driving there was some difficulty with taxi's-but this is down to other factors and not the B&B.

Visually, the room was nice.I paid extra to have a private bathroom rather than share, but sadly it was not cleaned very well.This was very disappointing and I decided to skip using the bath/shower.There was also a stain on the inside of the bed cover.For some reason, I did not get beans with my breakfast, although I had ordered them.The rest of the cooked breakfast was nice.I appreciated the bottled water and little bar of chocolate left on the bed.The free shower gel smelt lovely but the box it was in was very dusty, so I think it's a matter of attention to detail.It was hard to remember the codes for all the doors however - quickly nipping to the car, I got locked out and hadn't a clue what to do.Luckily, someone else came and let me in.

I visited England and Belgium for six weeks and spent three of those weeks at Rothmans Bed and Breakfast.The old building and slightly eccentric but charming host may not be to everyone's taste but for me it was just brilliant.The house was an absolute joy to behold and I can see how the owner, Peter, fell in love with it.Peter was very patient, helpful and effortlessly oozed charm even when I blew the trip switch on one of the electrical circuits.The breakfasts were superb and the cleanliness was first rate.I would give this bed and breakfast 6 stars out of 5 if I could.Needless to say I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in an establishment with character and charm as opposed to a chain of bland hotels.I just hope Peter has a room available for me the next time I visit Essex.

Easy access to house and room.Everything I could possibly require in the room plus extra (very welcome bar of chocolate lovely surprise).Welcomed TV in room as travelling solo.Bed very comfortable.Towels a bit hard/rough, but could put up with that.Super breakfast, beautifully cooked and good variety of items.Would have preferred single tables instead of sharing with other guests.Parking convenient, but had it been raining too far from car to house. Checking out time suited me on this occasion, but had it been a stay for leisure and not business, 9 am a bit early.Overall, excellent value for money and very comfortable.

Stayed 2 nights here while attending a friends wedding &felt very welcome. Beautiful old former manor house that has been turned into a lovely B &B without ruining it's character. Peter, the owner was very welcoming &helpful (especially so when I forgot the code to my room on the 1st day!). Room was very comfortable &quiet &breakfast was wonderful. Next time I am up in the area &need somewhere to stay I will look no further than here as it offers everything anyone can need. Ample parking too. Thanks once again!

This beautiful house, festooned with wisteria and roses at the time of my stay, provides a perfect resting place for the weary traveller.Close to the town of Chelmsford yet pleasantly distanced from the bustle of town life, every comfort has been provided for by the owner. I stayed for one night at Rothmans. It suited me very well as I was travelling on my own, and with some time constraints. Having the entry code details in advance was very useful as was the facility to organise my own breakfast when I was ready. The bed was very comfortable and the room more than adequate for my needs.If I had a criticism it would be that as an older woman on her own an ensuite toilet would have enhanced my stay. However I doubt that this would be possible to organise in such a lovely old house.

We stayed in the beautiful 4 poster room for one night having attended a family birthday party locally. It was lovely to know that we could arrive and let ourselves in (sometimes you can feel pressured into arriving at exactly the time you have estimated especially if you have to collect or meet owner for a key). The room was spacious, clean and full of charm. The bed was really comfy and snug, lovely soft dressing gowns were available, tea, coffee plentiful, and the breakfast was lovely and cooked to perfection. Peter was very chatty and friendly too xx Our only little niggle was that the ensuite smelt rather unsweet but we believe it was only because of the system that was in there...We would thoroughly recommend this B &B and would stay again should we get anymore party invites!!! I travel with two small dogs finding somewhere I can stay with them is not easy and more often than not there is a cost of £10 per dog per night.Rothmans is not like that my dogs were welcome in this lovely homely place.The room was good, plenty of room for the two dog cages, bed very comfortable and everything I needed was there, breakfast was again good with plenty of choice.I will use this B&B again

Rothmans is a beautiful old house, well loved and maintained. Stayed in the Four Poster Room - and what a room!! Huge space, with olde worlde four poster and new world flat screen TV!! Only downside is the tiniest ensuite I've ever seen with extremely noisy plumbing!!. Breakfast was good, freshly cooked and served at 8 on the dot. Strange arrangement of pre-ordering bfast either the night before or in our case, days before via email as we were arriving very late, but it works well! Codes for all doors (front door and bedrooms) again sent by email meant we could let ourselves in when we arrived as proprietor was out. Again, strange system but it worked!! Rating loses a star only because of the bathroom!! Overall a good experience, we may well return!!

Hence the compact en suite was installed in what was a large (featureless) walk in wardrobe and a macerator is required to pump waste to the far side of the building (without damaging old floors/ceilings) I have experienced a much tinier en suite, in a B&B; in a Georgian building in BathBreakfast forms are to allow you to choose at leisure and for me to have all ingredients ready. Likewise door codes mean guests can come and go at any time (eg after late night wedding reception) Also, this is a family B&B; and, although I endeavour to greet guests, asking for time of arrival, I would humbly wish to "have a life" (I was in London taking my son out for his birthday when you arrived - as I had arranged that with you).I hope the Dance competition in Brentwood went well and you didn't get soaked on the wayYou will of course be very welcome in the futureKind RegardsPeter

Great nights sleep - perfect location, easy parking - lovely tea tray &even a chocolate bar! perfectly acceptable bathroom facilities -all at a reasonable price. If you want character, friendliness and charm then highly recommended. If you like boring, blandly modern (and in Chelmsford the very NOISEY!) Travelodge - then its not for you... everyone else ENJOY! :)

We had the four post room and it was a really good size room and comfortable, it was a big shabby but clean and tidy , the ensuite however was more the size of a wardrobe , I physically could not get into the shower and had to shave half standing in the shower and half leaning out to see the mirror. You need to be a size zero supermodel to use the toilet without folding yourself in half to get your knees under the sink which is right opposite - about 3foot square in total you have to question the trades description act before calling it ensuite !

Hi Lynne/SimonThanks for the feedback.(I'm genuinely puzzled by your word "shabby" however - the leather chairs, and the curtains are new, with some suitable period style furniture which may look aged?)The building is Grade 2 listed and we are restricted in what we are permitted to do. So you're absolutely right - it was originally a very large walk in (linen?) cupboard alongside the warm chimney breast, typical for c1600 buildings. I do want to maintain the unique heritage character - even in this village too much has been lost already - and many guests value that very "memory" of the past.However, I'm sorry this has meant it was such a squeeze for you. (Most guests have been happy with the space - that is not to reject your feedback, though)All comments help us to improve what we offer and thanks for taking the timePeter

I stayed here for 3 nights in 2 of the rooms (4 poster and regency) on business. Both rooms were very nice and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with a wide range of both cooked and uncooked options.

A truly hospitable environment. The rooms were lovely, sporting large televisions, plenty of window space and comfortable beds. Within walking distance of most anywhere in Great Baddow and busses to Chelmsford just outside. Nothing was too little trouble for the staff. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, I intend to stay there again when I have need and would gladly recommend Rothmans to anyone needing a room in the area.

The photo of the outside of the house on tripadvisor fooled me into thinking that this B &B was in a rural location. So when we (The wife and I) arrived, we were both surprised to find that it was in a relatively built up area. However, this is not a criticism and is entirely my own fault for not checking it out properly on Google maps.Some of the reviews on tripadvisor talk about lack of cleanliness, but we didn't find this to be the case. Some of the decor may have needed a bit of sprucing up, and neither of the bedside lamps in our room worked (there was no bulb in one of them), but these are minor gripes.The house is very old, with creaking boards and sloping floors, but it has bags of character.The host, Peter Aspbury, was accommodating, friendly and helpful.The cooked breakfast was lovely and served right on time (by him).Peter's cat, Pepsi, watching him (through the dining room window) as he served breakfast, and then trotting alongside him on the outside path was an amusing daily routine which added to the friendly quirkiness of the place.My son and I used the snooker room both nights that we were there and the full size table is superb. Next time, I'll bring my own cue, because the ones 'supplied' aren't very good.

Excellent in most respects, breakfast superb, room delightful.The one downside was lack of in room water for washing and kettle.This facility would bring the Georgian room close to perfection.

I found everything from booking to departure very easy. Very friendly plus extremely helpful (without being 'in your face' if you know what I mean. Bed comfy, food great and I felt safe. Hadn't stayed in this B&B, before, but was very glad I chose to. I stayed in one of their cheaper rooms, but was happy with the comfortable bed, amenities in the room, and bathrooms, which although are not en-suite, are directly next door. I was greeted on arrival by a very friendly lady, who cheerfully showed my friends and I to our rooms, and made us feel welcome. There is a good-sized lounge, with tea/coffee freely available, as well as available in your room. Check-in/out is negotiable, and they even pandered to my request for an ironing board and iron to be in my room, when I arrived. The cooked breakfast was tasty, which you request/choose the night before, which cereals, yoghurts and toast, already laid out. All together, a really nice stay, in a great little B&B.

I have just stayed here for a wedding on the area and thought it was a great little place. Friendly and clean. Breakfast was nice, very good selection of food. The photograph on this page does not do the B&B and favours.Tucked away behind a large headge and facing into the garden, is a quirky and beautiful old property, tastefully decorated and very homely.I recommend this B&B for value and comfort. The local pub (out of the B&B turn right) has a great beer garden and serves excellent food at a really reasonable price.Where in the South East can you get a meal and a large glass of wine for £10.70? Bargain.

I spend a night at this B&B.Small room , but was enough for me. Bathroom and shower, nice and clean, close to my room. Hot drinks, cooked breakfast, plenty to choose from for breakfast. Can call the taxi andbe in city centre in 10-15 minutes. Good value for money.Thank you.

I arrived a little late to order a cooked breakfast yet I was still offered the option if I wanted. I received a very warm and friendly welcome. The bed was VERY comfy and I slept like a log. Only slight downside was the shower which was not very powerful at all, but was clean and hot which is always good. Thanks very much.

Rothmans is an extensive and extremely old house and as such has creaky and crooked floorboards and shows its years in many ways. However Peter is a very welcoming host and we found the house to be warm, comfortable and with all its querks a charming place to stay. Excellent breakfasts and good value for money.

A truly charming Bed and Breakfast, beautifully presented internally with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Peter was a welcoming and attentive host. Good communication with the owner prior to arrival. On arrival we found the B&B was clean,tidy and we loved how the original characteristics of the house was maintained. We felt at ease and came and went as we pleased. Breakfast was of a great selection and very delicious. We pre-paid so check out was swift and stress free. Overall a pleasurable recommended stay.

As we wanted to visit Danbury it was a very convenient place to stay. Staff were very pleasant. Good breakfast. As antipodeans the old building was interesting with it's sloping floors - something we are not used to!! They were having drainage problems with our en-suite in the Regency room so had to use the bathroom next door.

Thanks for your kind remarksThe problem with the drainage took vigorous "plunging" & 2 plumbers to sort out. It turned out that some guest had put a cloth down the loo and it got caught up in the pump/macerator (we did have a clear prominent message on the top of the loo, requesting care...). I'm afraid these things happen but sorry for the inconvenience.

After going through the 'secret garden' gate we were greeted by Peter, who we made us feel very welcome. We were led to our room and were pleasantly surprised by it. The only 2 things that would have made the room better was the shower size as it was rather small but I understand why it was this way and the bed was very lumpy. But I loved the breakfast part of our stay. The great choice of cereals, cheeses, yoghurts, juices, teas and coffee was brill! The hot breakfast was yummy and whilst we ate we felt not like guest to a strangers place but friends. I like the easy going attitude of our host and will not hesitate to come back and of course let everyone know how great this place is. Considering how beautiful the place is and where it is the price is more than reasonable. Thank you Peter for your hospitality! Melissa &Terry

This is our 4th stay at Rothmans, we use it as a stop over the night before the local V Festival. Its always been clean and well run, nice to see some refurbishment done and the en-suite bathroom finished. Breakfast is great and keeps us going into the afternoon. See you next year!

Reasonable value for money however a bit old fashioned which possibly suits a 400 year old building.

Although i arrived late and left early everyone very friendly and was shown where to help myself to breakfast. Would prefer ensuite however an enjoyable stay in a interesting old house.

This is an excellent place to stay in Chelmsford.The room was very good and the breakfast was excellent.If returning to Chelmsford I would book here again.

Regency room has been updated since I last stayed towards the end of last year. Breakfast still very good.
